ART to ENGINEERING

Most of the time we start a project, either for ourselves or a customer, and it gets done. Then, other times, things conspire against us and a project stalls..... happens all the time.

The above bike is a prime example. I wanted it to be the first Bunt's bike built in this country since John Reed left for the foothills of California. First thought of over ten years ago, when I wanted to build a really fat bike, the widest available tyre at that time was a 180. So off I went to Avon Tyres with my begging bowl and left with a selection of rubber. The idea was to demonstrate my Patternmaking and Modelmaking skills by the comprehensive use of castings and composites in it's construction. I made up some basic timber patterns to bulk out the shapes which would later be refined into detailed and styled patterns for aluminium castings. ( Check out the images here to see the original ideas) The project received a lot of attention in the bike press and on the internet. Even after all this time it's still finding it's way on to new sites as a concept for the future! I guess it's ahead of it's time.

All this time I've kept it on show in the workshop, it's a talking point with visitors and when I get time, I modify something on it. Ofcourse, things change over time, so the work I've done since has reflected that. The latest major thing was the 400 series tyre for the rear. That also got me a lot of attention. But it also posed a question. What am I going to do with this this project? Either it needs to be completed as soon as possible, or I remove all the saleable stuff and scrap the rest. Hmmm.....I decided to take a straw poll from friends and collegues, both in the bike trade and business. Without exception they said, 'get on with it'.

So, it's back on my website. This time though, it's going to need some sponsorship if it's to be completed anytime soon. It's going to have to be big time sponsorship because there's going to be an incredible amount of detail going into this bike.

If anyone out there can help to this end, I'd like to hear from you.

More stuff to come, as soon as I can.........
